Deming to Albuquerque

Yesterday we drove up to Albuquerque. About 230 miles, well actually about 15 miles north of Albuquerque where we are spending two nights at a casino campground.

Are you surprised?? har har

It was a pretty boring trip scenery wise.

We stopped in Truth or Consequences NM for fuel and lunch and a guy at the gas station told me that in the entire county there are less than 10,000 people…holy cow!

The only good thing was the tail wind, for once.

I went into the casino to pay and check out the games and they have .25 roulette, $2 minimum bet…my kind of game. I went back later and played and lost $20. Went back after supper and won my $20 back, plus $60 at a .25 slot. Your favorite Leroy, triple cherries.

Today we will drive into Santa Fe. We have heard lots of good things about Santa Fe and will do some exploring. I was surfing this morning for scenic drives near Santa Fe and found several that we could do. Wednesday we will move to a Corp of Engineers park, about 30 miles from here and stay there about a week and do the drives.

Have a wonderful day.

love to all of ya

36th anniversary

Today we went back down to Palomas, Mexico. We were going to go to Red Lobster, but after having such a wonderful meal yesterday we went back today. I got my teeth cleaned ($40) and was happy that he did not find any other problems.  Than we went back to the “Casa de Pancho Villa restaurant and bar” for lunch and more shopping.

The food, again, was among the best Mexican food we have ever had. The chips and salsa that are served in most Mexican restaurants was just superb here. Yesterday we bought a quart of the sauce to bring back($3.50)

Here are a few shots of the restaurant and shop, lots of thing to look at and/or buy, and we did buy some. I bought two new drink glasses that are made from glass with impurities so they have bubbles and other things in the glass. Today Linda bought a table piece out of hand decorated, double fired porcelain. The store is huge and full from floor to ceiling with “stuff”, some of it very nice. The glass and porcelain work is in most cases extremely well done.

Columbus, NM is across the border from Palomas and is famous for a raid that Pancho Villa made on the USA around 1911

read about it if you are interested.

On the way back, the wind was blowing again, stronger than normal. We were about 15 miles south of Deming and saw the dust across the road and an emergency vehicle was on the side of the road with its lights flashing. We did slow down and put our headlights on before entering the dust. it was a little bit eerie, but only lasted for about a mile

hope  you are enjoying the new blog format. It is better that sending out an email, we think.

What about you??????

love to all of you

and happy 36th anniversary to us

Palomas Mexico

Today, we took a little day trip with the Chapman’s to Palomas Mexico.  Jim needs to have his teeth cleaned and thinks he may need a crown…..so, where do you go around here to get dental work done……..MEXICO.  They quoted him $200.00 to do the cleaning and have the crown made!  So, Wednesday morning we are heading back across to have the work done.

Palomas is a very small border town……..most famous for THE PINK STORE  Yes, if is definitely PINK.

The store is full of beautiful pottery, blankets, jewelry, etc……and a restaurant.  So, as everyone knows, I love to eat out and here was the perfect opportunity!!!!!!!

This was one of the best Mexican meals I have had in ages……so good, that we have decided to go back tomorrow for our anniversary.  Yes, would you all believe that tomorrow Jim and I will be married for 36 years!!!!!  WOW……..were does the time go.

Happy Easter

Easter Sunday was spent with good friends (Jim and Bobbie Chapman and John and Roseann Lloyd)
here in Deming, New Mexico.  Bobbie and Jim prepared a turkey dinner with all the “fixins”……….

……..which was wonderful!!!!!  Of course, we all “stuffed” ourselves……and then…..there was the afternoon nap.

Deming, New Mexico

This past Monday Linda and I took a scenic drive. We have not done any drives for a while as we have been in areas where we had done all the drives already.

We did a loop drive out of Deming stopping at “city of rocks” state park. After driving several miles off the main roads, there was a pay station to enter the park. We decided it was not worth the money and took a couple of pictures from the pay station.

If you want to see more of the history of the park click here http://www.gilawilderness.com/travel/cityofrocks.htm

From there we traveled along the highway thru a pretty valley with actual water running in the river. After all of the dry washes in Arizona it was nice to see. We ended up going past a open pit copper mine “El Chino”  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Chino_Mine It appears to be closed, but we stopped at the viewing point and took a couple of pictures. You can not see how big the hole is, or how large the tailing piles are from the pictures, but it is huge!!!

Tuesday we did a similar trip with Jim & Bobbie riding with us. Linda wanted to see a old town North of Silver City called Pinos Altos. Following is a little info off of the web site:

“Historic Pinos Altos (Tall Pines) is located just six miles north of Silver City on NM 15 at an elevation of 7040 feet. Nestled into the Gila National Forest, the town began in 1860 when three frustrated 49-ers, Thomas Birch, Colonel Snively and another guy named Hicks, stopped to take a drink in Bear Creek and discovered gold. The Main Street of this charming old gold-mining town is like an old western movie set. Many of the old buildings date back to the 1800's and have been restored and decorated with original memorabilia and artifacts.”

It is a very neat area to see and we enjoyed driving around the town on the hilly dirt streets.

From there on to the Cliff dwellings, or so we thought.

We took this winding, hilly, very pretty drive thru the mountains for about 30 miles to the turnoff for Rogers Lake. We took the lake road for about four miles to see what we could see at the lake and turned around and came back to the intersection and headed towards the Gila cliff dwelling. About a mile up the road was a sign saying it was 18 more miles of twisty turny roads and than a 3 mile hike to the cliff dwellings.  None of us was willing to do the 3 mile hike, so we turned around again and went back to a restaurant at the intersection and had a wonderful lunch with a great view of the mountains….

Thursday it was extremely windy here and you could not see anything over about a mile away. I drove out on the road north and took a couple of pictures of the dust, and while I was at it they closed the road!! They also closed I-10 for a long stretch. Here are the road signs warning people about the dust

and here are a few of the dust

It is hard to see, but the dust is blowing across the road, trust me, it really is!!

Hope you have a happy Easter.
